3,700 Free ebooks

Bang me on the head for missing this, but The National Academies Press has a site which hosts 3,700 ebooks that can be read free online. First impression indicates that this is probably another online ebook store judging by the “Items in Cart” text at the top right. However, the books listed within the site are in fact free to be read online. Viewers are given the option to purchase the print / paperback version for a reasonable price.

This site requires that you “register” in order to access the goodies, including the summary PDF’s, related podcasts for the title, and many more. Once that’s done, a cookie will be placed in your computer, telling the site that you can now from now onwards download the free ebooks. So don’t worry if you’re under the impression that you have to fill up a page long form just to gain access to the downloadable PDFs.

4 e-Art Ebooks by Roland Salazar Rose

I find the term e-Art rather exciting and something very unique. Although I believe this term is not new, I still find it quite an interesting approach in exploring the world of art. Here you will have 3 e-Art ebooks in PDF format, created, illustrated and compiled by Roland Salazar Rose. Without further adue, the 3 ebooks are as follow:-

e-Art Ebook 1: If Only…

“Ironically, this splendid marriage of image and word sprung out of the need to confront the end of a marriage. This is what artists do with sorrow and loss: they create beauty and meaning. Salazar’s paintings are stirring and original. Pearlman’s verses are the perfect complements to the images. Pearlman the poet captures some small suggestion in each of Salazar’s richly painted pictures and develops it into a succinct, musical quatrain that somehow evokes the feeling of the picture and yet still allows the viewer his or her own experience. By themselves, the pieces work well, but together the images and poems create a moving testament of the power of love to move beyond heartbreak into something grander than it ever was.”

Mexican Secrets - e-Artbook

Mexican Secrets - e-Artbook
by Roland Salazar Rose

Mexican Secrets—is that it? Simply divulge what you are about in words and images sir, walk away from the pit you have dug for your self in life? No, I think, not!

For if you must carry secrets as baggage in your journey down life’s pathway you must recognize as well that it isn’t easy to toss the secrets aside, walk away, just as it is equally difficult to schlep them forward. It appears impossible to rid yourself of the meaning you have placed on them—indeed, stamped on them—they continue to ensnare you: another burdensome self-inflicted piece of baggage.

No matter what means of action you take you live with the past secrets in the here and now. You must shoulder them and bear on. As ‘life is for living’ you may in fact encumber your thirst for it by tasting the bitter pill it possesses.

Aztec Deities - e-Artbook

Aztec Deities Series
by Roland Salazar Rose

From the author…

Why did I do the Aztec Deities Series when obviously I could never present a true appreciation of the majesty of this time in history? I didn’t research the mythology on the God Tonatiuh, which translates as “He Who Makes the Day” and use this as a basis for the painting. I let my imagination take hold and this guided me to represent the gods.

Clearly this work represents a “gringo” contemporary artist’s understanding and view of a period in history when gods & goddesses abounded and when a vast military and civil society was destroyed for ‘conquest: for gold’ and in the name of church and state.

As for me, I did not seek out the gods and goddess; they came to me!

My Father’s Room the Four Seasons of the Master Myth

My Father’s Room the Four Seasons of the Master Myth
by Roland Salazar Rose

A review by Crystal Roberts

Roland Salazar Rose has released for free an e-book entitled My Father’s Room the Four Seasons of the Master Myth.

Written in two Parts; Part I of My Father’s Room begins with the author’s relationship with his father and unfolds the saga of his life, describing how he came to move from his home in Maine, to live in “my father’s room” in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico.

In Part II he presents a monologue for each of the ‘Four Seasons’: metaphorically spring, summer, fall and winter, seasons of the spirit not climatic. The monologue on his DVD that will accompany the hard cover edition is done by a voice over by the author, followed by 25 images from the Four Seasons Series of 1,000 paintings; each of the other seasons on the DVD follow in a similar manner.

Soul Art The Chaos Trilogy

The Chaos Trilogy
by Roland Salazar Rose

Review by Cheri Long.

Once in a long decade or two, an artist emerges with something to say which we need to hear at this very moment. He speaks to our grappling for understanding of the world; he nudges our emotions and awakens the ability to question, to seek the great “aha” in the midst of whirling confusion. Roland Salazar Rose is such an artist: he has become a soul painter.

The Alternative (Focused On The Need To Save Humanity)

Gillian Speke of http://www.the-alternative.org.uk/ has a great free ebook about a Green Living campaign directory detailing how to overcome poverty, homelessness, pollution and corruption, and survive global warming; featuring design specifications for new-style affordable housings for homes, commercial buildings, transport and space-craft.

Gillian also has a blog on the above website, together with the rest of the information, including the download link of the full ebook and individual chapters which you download directly. The full ebook is relatively huge I would say, going at 28mb, giving the reason why I think the individual chapters are provided for an alternative downloading method. But hey, don’t let the size stop you from downloading the ebook. It also has a short ebook version, so you might want to get that version if you don’t have the patience on getting the full one. Do take note that this is not the ordinary ebook which you download to read, although it meant to be read, but for me personally it tends to look more like an encyclopedia, or a dictionary, I don’t know probably it looks like that because of the layout.

Anyway, enough with the talking, here are your download links :-
Click here to download the full ebook (28mb)
Click here to download the short ebook (18mb)
or click here to get the chapters individually (top left)
or just click here to visit Gillian’s blog and digest everything at one go.

Mishima By John Nathan

Front Cover

At forty-five, Yukio Mishima was the outstanding Japanese writer of his generation, celebrated both at home and abroad for The Sailor Who Fell from Grace with the Sea. In 1970 he startled the world by stepping out onto a balcony in Tokyo before an assembly of troops and plunging a sword into his abdomen; a disciple then beheaded him, completing the ritual of hara-kiri. John Nathan's riveting biography traces the life of this tortured, nearly superhuman personality. Mishima survived a grotesque childhood, and subsequently his sadomasochistic impulses became manifest—as did an increasing obsession with death as the supreme beauty. Nathan, who knew Mishima professionally and personally, interviewed family, colleagues, and friends to unmask the various—often seemingly contradictory—personae of the genius who felt called by "a glittering destiny no ordinary man would be permitted."

Tom Cruise By Andrew Morton

Front Cover

1992: Andrew Morton showed a Princess in a light we had never seen before--Diana: Her True Story became a #1 New York Times bestseller.
1999: Andrew Morton revealed the young woman behind the blue dress--Monica’s Story was a #1 New York Times bestseller.
January 15, 2008: Andrew Morton uncovers the true story of the biggest celebrity of our age.
Everyone knows Tom Cruise---or at least what he wants us to know. We know that he overcame a difficult childhood to star in astonishing array of blockbusters: Top Gun, Rain Man, Born on the Fourth of July, A Few Good Men, Interview with the Vampire, Jerry Maguire, three Mission: Impossible movies, War of the Worlds, and more. We know he has taken artistic chances, too, and as a result has earned three Academy Award nominations and three Golden Globes, along with the respect of acting legends like Paul Newman and Dustin Hoffman.
After that, the picture becomes a little less clear. We know that Tom is a Scientologist, but not necessarily what that means in his life. We know that, despite persistent rumors about his sexuality, he has been married to Mimi Rogers, Nicole Kidman, and Katie Holmes. But it was not until the spring of 2005, when he jumped on Oprah’s couch to proclaim his love for Katie and denounced Brooke Shields for turning to the “Nazi science” of psychiatry, that we began to realize how much we didn’t know about the charming, hardworking star.

For two years, award-winning biographer Andrew Morton has been tirelessly seeking out everyone from former teachers and girlfriends to Scientology insiders to friends who have watched a once-bullied, “nothing special” outsider transform himself into an icon Forbes has called the most powerful celebrity in the world Here, with never-seen photos and never-heard revelations, is a riveting, sometimes shocking portrait of the real Tom Cruise---his work, his love life, his marriages, his religion---from a master at uncovering the true story behind the public face of celebrity.

Don't Make Me Think! By Steve Krug

Yesterday's Web looked far different from today's Web, and tomorrow's Web will look more different still. Amidst all of this change, however, one aspect of Web use remains the same: The sites that offer the best, easiest, most intuitive experience are the ones people visit again and again. To ensure that your sites provide that experience, this guide from usability guru Krug distills his years of on-the-job experience into a practical primer on the do's and don'ts of good Web design. Web design in a nutshell By Jennifer Niederst Robbins

Preview this book

Are you still designing web sites like it's 1999? If so, you're in for a surprise. Since the last edition of this book appeared five years ago, there has been a major climate change with regard to web standards. Designers are no longer using (X)HTML as a design tool, but as a means of defining the meaning and structure of content. Cascading Style Sheets are no longer just something interesting to tinker with, but rather a reliable method for handling all matters of presentation, from fonts and colors to the layout of the entire page. In fact, following the standards is now a mandate of professional web design.

Our popular reference, Web Design in a Nutshell, is one of the first books to capture this new web landscape with an edition that's been completely rewritten and expanded to reflect the state of the art. In addition to being an authoritative reference for (X)HTML and Cascading Style Sheets, this book also provides an overview of the unique requirements of designing for the Web and gets to the nitty-gritty of JavaScript and DOM Scripting, web graphics optimization, and multimedia production. It is an indispensable tool for web designers and developers of all levels.

The third edition covers these contemporary web design topics:

  • Structural layer: HTML 4.01 and XHTML 1.0 (9 chapters), including an alphabetical reference of all elements, attributes and character entities
  • Presentation layer: Ten all-new chapters on Cascading Style Sheets, Level 2.1, including an alphabetical reference of all properties and values.
  • Behavior layer: JavaScript and scripting with the Document Object Model (DOM)
  • Web environment: New web standards, browsers, display devices, accessibility, and internationalization
  • Web graphics optimization: Producing lean and mean GIF, JPEG, PNG, and animated GIFs
  • Multimedia: Web audio, video, Flash, and PDF

Organized so that readers can find answers quickly, Web Design in a Nutshell, Third Edition helps experienced designers come up to speed quickly on standards-based web design, and serves as a quick reference for those already familiar with the new standards and technology.

There are many books for web designers, but none that address such a wide variety of topics. Find out why nearly half a million buyers have made this the most popular web design book available.
